Al The Barber

The Beginning

It was a hot summer day and I was in my garage with the first pair of scissors I had just purchased. I remember feeling the excitement and running to my good friends and asking them, “can I cut your hair”? I was stoked when they said yes. That’s when all the referrals began. “Sick cut, where did you get that done?” And to the garage they came. I just got addicted. One style after the next, it was like art on a canvas. “Do you like it?” The rush just came every time they gave me that “bro nod”. I was just a teen.


The Barbershop

I went to school. I practiced the art of cutting hair every chance I got. I saved up every dollar I could and I got the opportunity to take on a tiny shop in the heart of metro Detroit. Word of mouth began to spread, and things got real, real fast.


The Experience

I managed to inspire six other barbers to join and expand the upper echelon class of cutting hair and creating canvas of art. Naturally, the environment came next. I didn’t want anyone to just come in and get a cut. I wanted them to feel the experience. Get into the atmosphere, get the classiest look or the edgiest fade, but while your in, experience the freshness of being you and feeling good about it.


Graduating from Cutting Hair to Styling

Frustrations and challenges came when a good hair cut would die out by the middle of the day. What would be worse is when someone comes back to get their next fresh look and they have dandruff or their hair looks unhealthy. When they left the shop, they were groomed. When they used all these different products, they came back disheveled. We had to do something.

The TGM Evolution

I started working with formulation specialists, pharmacists, scientists, people passionate about products and I explained to them that we have to give our clients the opportunity to stay fresh and do it at home. We have to start focusing on products that work specifically for all types of hair. I want to see our clients sitting in the chair with healthier hair each month they come back.

And so, The Groomed Man Company was born.
